Quick Update

I've redone the cat shelters for the feral colony. I replaced then last month but someone either stole them (can't imagine why) or more likely threw them away. The cats congregate in the parking lot of a public health building, only coming out at dawn/dusk. There's an abandoned lot next door where I put the food dishes and shelters. I've been scolded for feeding the cats but I don't know what they expect. I guess I'm supposed to turn a blind eye and let the cats starve/freeze to death. Not bloody likely.

Anyway, I made new shelters. It's easy. Just get a large rubbermaid storage container, cut two small holes for doors (using a hair dryer to soften the plastic first) and then fill with straw. Straw is a great heat conductor and the cats need all the help they can get. It took longer than I had hoped. I had to buy the containers and straw, transport it home via bicycle, assemble and then transport via bicycle again to the cats area. Mind you, I live about 45 minutes away from both the store and the cats area, so it was a haul on every trip. It took me about 10 trips. I hope no one messes with the shelters again. They're cheap to make but a hassle to replace.

Here is one of the kittens I found a home for. Could you say no to this face? I didn't think so.

I have nothing to do with this case but I'm sharing it in hopes that anyone can help. A 4 week old kitten was surrendered at a Manhattan shelter, the owners said "Disposal" was the reason. Basically, they didn't care that a young kitten would be killed because they didn't want it. He has been rescued and is in foster care right now. There is a chip-in for his vet care. Even a few dollars will help.

I had a couple of bad days after reading/watching the news about the Penn State scandal. I was trying to avoid it as I know things like that are a trigger. It's better now but I have to be careful of reading news like that. It can so easily send me in a downward spiral. Thankfully, Greg is here and he knows when to step in and help me.

Harvest is complete for the year. I'm all done with the canning. Our pantry is filled to the brim, as is our neighbours. It looks like today was our last mild day before the cold weather sits in. We've been lucky. It's mid-November and I've been getting away with wearing two hoodies whilst on my bike. Time to dig out the parka and settle in for the winter.

Happy Fall!
